The turbocharged Scirocco is coming down-under.

Volkswagen's sporty two-door Scirocco is coming to Australia.

Volkswagen Australia will widen its appeal even further in 2011, with managing director Anke Koeckler confirming the Scirocco sports coupe is "a matter of when, not if".

Speaking to Drive at the launch of Volkswagen's new pocket-rocket Polo GTI, Koeckler declined to say when Australians should expect to see the coupe, but didn't rule out a surprise arrival in 2011.

"I knew you would ask this question," said Koeckler. "It's an amazing car, and I love this car as well - that's why I'm working on that.

"It's probably more a matter of when [it will arrive]," Koeckler told Drive.
Quizzed further on the timing of its arrival, Koeckler grinned at the suggestion of a 2011 release.

"Could be," she said. "We're going to work on that. I know its a great car, and I know you guys are looking forward to it."

The turbocharged Scirocco is based on the same underpinnings as Volkswagen's Golf, and, as Drive has previously reported, VW has been tentative to bring the coupe in alongside the GTI for fear of sales cannibalisation.

When it does make it to Australia, the Scirocco isn't certain to be available in multiple specifications - the most likely candidate for Down Under being the top-of-the-pops Scirocco R.

That model outguns VW's quickest Golf with a 195kW power output, and manages a hefty 350Nm of torque (the Golf R uses the same engine, though in a slightly detuned form at 188kW and 330Nm).

Koeckler confirmed that Volkswagen's soon-to-be-released micro city car, the Up, won't be appearing locally in 2011.

Koeckler said the Up (if that's what it is to be called) would be a struggle to justify for local sale, with high costs of manufacture limiting the possibility of a sub $15K city car from the brand.

The replacement for the New Beetle (which is likely to simply wear the "Beetle" moniker) may also struggle to make an appearance before 2012.

Koeckler did, however, confirm the release of several key new models for Volkswagen in Australia in 2010 - including the all-new Passat (1st quarter), Jetta (3rd quarter) and Touareg (mid-year).

    A grin is not confirmation.

Look at AIMS 2011, if it make an appearance there then expect is here.

Is it unfair to speculate that the release has been a ploy, based on seeing the successful launch of GTI and Golf R, selling or at least getting orders for a certain volume of Golf R, THEN putting it back on the agenda?

It makes sense in a way, in a smaller market like Australia, to fool the market into the 'no Scirocco' scenario so that there's just one hero car. Get the hero car out there, the market excited, the cars ordered and shipped - then announce an upcoming new hero car for 18mths in the future.

Wouldn't the Scirocco be getting a midlife update by 2012?
Sounds good. More power in the super hero car, in the mid-future, so as not to alienate the happy Golf R orderers and buyers.

The only big losers are the RAWS workshops if they cannot get their 'used' but new NZ-sourced Sciroccos complianced and recoup some of their investment.

In any case, in the family of VAG performance cars, it's a nice fit to offer a car for each slightly different buyer:
Golf R five door for family/driver car; and
Scirocco 3dr for whoever doesn't need the five door/family aspect.

VW's really desperate to get models and sales volumes to a level to get to #1. Good for VW buyers since the product is exciting, award-winning and great value product. What's next? Similar, later announcement of a super hot Polo, once all of the latest hero cars are landed? Hope so.

Great news, but I'll believe it when I see it too.

It's not hard to help thinking VAG did hold out on this to boost sales of the GTI and R, but how often do they release all variants at the same time anyway.

Agree different cars for different needs, but would be good to have the choice and the Scirocco is one stylish car, and a bit more unique IMO. No good if you don't want a 3 door though, and the R's AWD is an advantage. I don't think one is clearly better than the other (but spewing if you just bought a 3dr Golf R).

They'll deffo bring it in. I've been saying it all along. A friend of mine works at the Wangara dealers who said they wont get it in because of a lack of market, which is obviously rubbish. NZ got it!!

They're clearly just securing the sales of the GTI and Golf .:R so Bizi i reckon you're spot on.

I can't wait, I saw lots of new 'rocco's last year in Europe and they are soooo awesome in the flesh.
