    Mk6 parcel shelf rattle

I've noticed that my parcel shelf is now rattling over very rough patches of road. I checked it to ensure it was clipped in properly to the plastic housings either side... all OK.

Anyone else have this & how have you fixed it? I'm after a 'classy' solution that doesn't look bad come resale time.

One observation is my car only has 1 rubber foot on the tailgate that presses against the parcel shelf when it's shut. It's placed in the centre.

However, my Mark5 comfortline had 2 rubber feet and didn't have this issue. So I am also wondering how many rubber feet everyone else has? For the 2010 build is it the same or different?

Logically where I'm going is contemplating asking the dealer to put on another 2 rubber feet (my 'classy' solution).

Are you sure your rear seats are properly latched and locked?? It may pay to put a small amount of electrical tape around the mounts that the seat latches onto. I had a hard to pinpoint rattle in my MkV GTI that ended up being the rear seats not latching and locking properly.

There is also the thing about the parcel shelf string balls swinging around and causing noise...

x 2 this was one of my first "mods". I only renew it every 20 odd movements of the rear seats so it lasts for ages.

They won't fit another two as they can't. The rubber feet goes through a slot in the plastic and this is how they are held in place. This is only to stop the rear shelf from moving up and down when driving anyway.

As Coreying pointed out check your balls are secure and not banging around when you're moving. Your balls are a bit squashed compared to mine which are perfectly round and bigger but the same problems occur.

Here is how I stopped my balls from banging around - Knocking noise from retaining band on luggage compartment cover

I found that switching from boxers to briefs worked for me.

I've gotta love this forum! Always talking about our cars (i.e. phallic symbols) and balls.

The rattling is caused by the parcel shelf itself moving up & down vertically and hitting the plastic frame that it rests on. Nothing to do with the seats... i've had that problem before as well & found that I didn't correctly fix the seat backrest into position.

From what Mav is saying I think the easiest solution is to remove the rubber foot, maybe put some felt underneath the foot to "beef up" the thickness so that it presses against the shelf harder when the tailgate is shut.
